INTRODUCTION
This manual is designed to inform university employees about the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) 29 CFR 1910.1200 and the University of Rochester Hazard Communication Program (HazCom).
The OSHA HazCom Standard was enacted to provide employees the "Right to Know" the hazards of chemicals in the workplace and how to protect themselves. The Hazard Communication Standard was updated in 2015 to align with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This update to the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets. The revised HazCom Standard mandates a program for evaluating potential hazards of chemicals, and standardizes required sections in Safety Data Sheets (SDS's) and container labelling.
